Nonprofit Serves Area Residents with Intellectual Disabilities
UNION GROVE – Shepherds Community Café volunteer Rachel Ahrens needs occasional assistance with transportation, household chores or balancing her checking account.
For the past five years, Anchor Ministries has been there to help.
The Racine-based nonprofit provides services for clients with intellectual disabilities, serving a population with a growing need.
“Anchor (Ministries) does so much work for people with disabilities and does so much for the community,” Ahrens said. “They take us to work. They take us to church. They take us to our doctor’s appointments. They do a lot to help us.”
On Thursday, it was Ahrens turn to give back.
The Union Grove resident teamed up with Leah Migliaccio of Shepherds Community Café – located inside Community State Bank's Union Grove headquarters – and donated to Anchor Ministries as part of Community State Bank’s #Gift2Giving program.
Anchor Ministries was one of 17 local nonprofits chosen as a recipient of over $15,000 raised through this year's campaign.
Community State Bank gives each of its employees $150 to donate to a nonprofit organization of their choice. In addition to the bank-provided funds, Community State Bank matches any employee donation up to $150.
“This is such a nice surprise,” said Lynda DePoppe, Chief Operations Officer at Anchor Ministries. “This will help us in so many ways.
“We love this population and try to help them in any way possible. We try and give them anything they need so they can live independently.”
Ahrens said it was a “no-brainer” to select Anchor Ministries as her #Gift2Giving recipient.
“It feels great to give back,” Ahrens said. “When I told my mom I was going to be able to donate to Anchor (Ministries), her face just lit up.”
