Shepherds College Annual Spring Greenhouse Sale is Underway

Annuals, Perennials Among 6,000 plants on Display for community event

UNION GROVE — Shepherds College, a post-secondary school for students with intellectual and developmental disabilities, kicks off its annual Spring Greenhouse Sale on Friday (April 25) through May 31.

The greenhouse is open on Fridays from 1 to 5 p.m. and on Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Hours are extended on Memorial Day from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There are over 6,000 plants ranging from annuals, perennials, herbs, vegetables and houseplants. Handcrafted decor is also available.

Prices range from $3 for plants to $24 for large planters.

“We have a lot of different plants to offer, a pretty large variety,” said Rebecca Gerlach, Shepherds College Lead Horticulture Instructor. “We actually start all the way back in January when students return from Christmas break.”

Second-year students learn their way around a greenhouse and develop job skills needed for future employment.

“What I like enjoy most is just finding out where the students niche is,” Gerlach said. “What each student enjoys most and has interest in and skill as well and kind of help them tap into their strengths and build their abilities.”
