#Gift2Giving: Safe Families for Children Making Impact in Many Ways

Community State Bank’s Kitty Popenhagen looked to make a difference for others when she discovered Safe Families for Children.

Popenhagen didn’t realize the experience would soon change her life as well.

“Our journey started when we hosted a little boy, Nehemiah, whose mom was homeless and struggling to take care of him,” Popenhagen said.

“That experience has left a lasting impact on us. Not only did we bond with Nehemiah, but we also formed true relationships with his whole family, sharing their lives and offering support where we could.”

Eleven years ago, Popenhagen became involved as a host family through Safe Families for Children. That experience created new friendships and lasting memories.

It’s not uncommon to see the Popenhagen family at Nehemiah’s football games or lending a hand with school supplies or groceries.

In support of the local nonprofit, Popenhagen and CSB co-worker Jackie Kolbeck donated through the bank’s seventh annual #Gift2Giving employee-driven drive.

Safe Families for Children is one of 17 area nonprofits chosen as a recipient of over $15,000 raised through the campaign.

Community State Bank gives each of its employees $150 to donate to a nonprofit organization of their choice. In addition to the bank-provided funds, Community State Bank matches any employee donation up to $150.

“I picked Safe Families for Children because I’ve seen firsthand the incredible difference they make in families’ lives,” Popenhagen said.

Popenhagen said there’s many ways to become involved with Safe Families for Children, from hosting children for short or longer stays to offering practical help.

“Everyone can find a way to support families in need,” Popenhagen said. “It’s truly a community effort that helps struggling parents regain stability while keeping their families together.”
